Earlier this month we interviewed Chris, from the Waikato Scale Model Club (SCMC), about what was then an upcoming modelling competition. That event took place on the 17th September at the Hamilton Cosmopolitan Club, and saw many attendees from around New Zealand show up to take part and check out what were some incredible entries.
The Hamilton Immortals were invited to incorporate their annual miniature painting competition in with the event, which meant there was plenty of opportunity for cross-pollination in terms of skill-sharing and discussing various approaches to painting the plastic, metal, and resin models of the miniature world we all love so much.
The venue was a real hit, it was busy all day, but the ample space meant that it was never so cramped that it interfered with viewing the models. The Cossie Club had a bar and bistro facilities running all day, and there was plenty of parking available.
The event had a great turn out, with 190 entries for the WSMC Model Competition, and 35 entries for the Hamilton Immortals Club Painting Competition. There were plenty of beautifully crafted trophies up for grabs for each of the WSMC Model Competition categories, as well as the Immortals ‘Best in Show’ trophy, and the ‘Modelling Excellence’ trophies available for Immortals side of things. Winners of each of the Immortals categories received a ‘Parker Hobbies’ certificate which doubled as a voucher, and we were asked to select three stand out entries on the WSMC side to receive Parker Hobbies vouchers too – all of which went to amazing dioramas. See a full break-down of the results further along in this article.
The show attracted many well-known faces from the New Zealand community. One of which was Ian, who along with others moderates the Facebook group, ‘Kiwi Model Builders’. He conducted some live reporting to the Facebook page during the event, and was kind enough to interview us about our fledgling business, Parker Hobbies. If you are New Zealand based and into Scale Modelling, we highly recommend joining their Facebook page, they are a supportive and knowledgeable community. Link to their group below.
WSMC were kind enough to invite Parker Hobbies to have a table at the show to exhibit our products. Our Scale75 range of acrylic paints seemed to be new to many of the scale modellers we spoke to, with Tamiya’s Acrylic paints seemingly the most popular choice presently in the community. Those that had heard of it however were very pleased to see that we were stocking Badger Stynylrez Primer, a great product which us kiwi hobbyists previously had to buy in from overseas.
In the fortnight following the event I have had the opportunity to speak with members of both clubs who attended the event, and everyone seemed to have a blast and was pleased with the arrangement. Hopefully this means it will become a repeat event, as I know I came away inspired to work on a diorama for a future competition!
