Bolt Action: Trouble in Glenview
Bolt Action: Trouble in Glenview (BATIG) is a V3 Bolt Action tournament hosted by Parker Hobbies, in collaboration with the Hamilton Immortals Miniature Wargaming Club. Taking place on Saturday 3rd May, this event will run from 8am until 5.30pm at the Hamilton Immortals new venue, the Glenview Club. The organiser is Peter from Parker Hobbies, available to contact at info@parkerhobbies.co.nz.
Event Outline
Last year Parker Hobbies ran its first tournament which entirely focused on beginners, and we were pleased with how it went. The only complaint we received was that two games wasn’t enough, so this time around we are stepping it up a notch with three games, but still keeping the point and order dice counts restricted in the hope each of the games can be played to completion. A number of the players taking part are still new to Bolt Action, therefore we will be keeping the point limits lower, playing one 800 point game, and two 1000 point games. While we are playing a historic game, this is not an historic or themed tournament, players can run whatever units from their 'Armies of' book, or the main rulebook, regardless of whether those units would have coincided in the same theatre or the same period of WW2.
Special Rules and Missions
The Bolt Action Enthusiast some of us know from Youtube, Bo Mortensen, along with other players from Denmark’s Bolt Action community, have recently released the ‘Commander’s Compendium’ document. This document contains a number of optional rules to supplement the Bolt Action version 3 rulebook. Some of us have been play testing this locally, and have found it addresses some of the challenges we were experiencing with the new edition. Each of the 3 missions we will be playing are from this compendium, in addition to this we will be using some of the rule changes from the document, see below:
1. Limited support!
There are limited amounts of artillery and air-support. You can bring a maximum of 1 observer.
2. Enhanced Assaults
Assaulters strike first against defenders that are down and in the open. If a unit would normally get defended obstacle, but are down, the fight is simultaneous.
3. Holding Objectives
To capture an objective, the unit must be within 3” of the centre of the objective. Vehicles can only contest objectives, not capture. Spotters and empty transports cannot capture or contest.
4. Boots in the mud!
Armoured platoons only have 2 slots for vehicles.
5. Cheaper Big Tanks
All vehicles with a 10+ or 11+ damage value receive a 20% price discount. The 20% discount is applied after the experience level and additional wargear has been selected.

- A copy of your rulebook (if you have one)
- A copy of your ‘armies of’ book (Germany and possibly USA should be released by the time of the event)
Event scoring
Players will fill out a form following each game to indicate the score, whether they won, drew, or lost, and hand this in to the organiser. A win gives you 3 points, a draw 1 point, and a loss no points. Players should also keep a tally of how many ‘finishing blows’ their nominated command vehicle scores during the game, see tank ace award below.
There will be a best painted army award decided by popular vote, those that wish to display their armies should do so during the 1 hour lunch break so everyone can get a better look.
There won’t be a best sportsmanship award, as this is difficult to score over just 3 games, but I am hoping that in the spirit of this event, everyone will make an effort to make their games an enjoyable experience for their opponent, as well as themselves.
Tank Commander Award
Just like last year, there will be an additional award up for grabs, the Tank Commander Award! Last year this was won by Joshuah Megchelse who blew everyone else's kill count out of the water with his German Tiger tank. At the start of the event each player nominates one of their command vehicles (tank or otherwise), and throughout the event keeps a tally of how many finishing blows this scores. A finishing blow is any action that results in the destruction of a unit, or causes the unit to take a moral test that it in turn fails - causing the remaining soldiers to run away. Note, a finishing blow can be scored with weapons, or a vehicle melee assault. If your nominated command vehicle is knocked out in a game, not to worry, by the next game your crew have replaced their vehicle and are back at it - your score culminates regardless of how many times you are knocked out.
Lunch
There is an excellent bar and bistro at the Glenview club, this will be open for our 1.30pm lunch break. If you think you will be feeling peckish by the morning tea break at 10.30am, it would pay to bring something along.
Army list submission
Please send through your two army lists to Peter at info@parkerhobbies by Saturday 26th April for checking. There has been some confusion about changes to army composition in version 3, so please get this in as early as you can in case some revision is required.
Entry Fees
Each player should pay $20 before the event to help cover the cost of prizes, trophies, and to allow us to make a donation to the Hamilton Immortals Miniature Gaming Club for allowing us to use their facilities. Payment is to be made to:
Parker Hobbies 06-0313-0806267-00.
Please reference your name and bolt action when making the payment.
Recording
Photographs and possibly videos will be recorded at this event for promotional services, these may be published on the internet. If you do not want your face included in any published pictures, please let me know ahead of time and I will make an effort to blur these.
