Scale75 Prism Effect paints have arrived!

Scale75 Prism Effect paints have arrived!

They’re here! The long awaited Scale75 Prism Effect paints have arrived at Parker Hobbies.

These beautiful acrylic paints come in 17ml plastic dropper bottles (they’re sealed so you will need to pierce them with a needle), and packaged into two sets, the warm colours (Solar Flares), and the cool colours (Boreal Lights).

Examples of each of the paints when painted on either a black or a white sphere, note the top image listing paints SPE-01 through SPE-08 are in the Boreal Lights set, and the bottom image lists paints SPE-09 through SPE-16 from the Solar Flares set

Let me start by saying that I have no idea how these paints work! But somehow, the colour expressed varies depending on if it has been applied over a white or black surface. For example, in the picture below I took this Warhammer 40k Harlequin Death Jester from Games workshop, based it black with Badger Stynylrez primer, airbrushed some Scale75 Scalecolor white from above and in a few other spots around the model, and then when dry, I airbrushed Scale75 Prism Effect Green Pearl all over it.

The picture doesn’t do it much justice, but what resulted was a glittery mixture of emerald and silver with a glossy finish, which reflects a lot of the environmental light. The black parts of the model went emerald green, and the white parts a pearly silver.

I’m yet to try these out with a hand brush, but I can report that they went beautifully through my Badger Patriot 105 airbrush (0.35mm nozzle) after squirting some paint into the cup with a couple of drops of Scale75 acrylic thinner.

On the back of each bottle it is displayed quite clearly what colours will appear over both a black and white base, but I’d suggest grabbing a box and having a bit of a play to figure out which paint does what.

On the back of each bottle it shows the difference in colour expressed when painted over a black base or a white base

All in all, these paints give something resembling the iridescent effect we see on racy cars every now and then, they were easy to apply through the airbrush and gave a nice result with very little effort.

Now to decide what my first project will be with these bad boys… Maybe some sci-fi aliens, or some magical items from a fantasy setting!
