Vallejo Metal Colour paints are a fairly well-known product in the New Zealand miniature painting, figure painting, and scale modelling scenes for their broad range of silvers, fine metallic pigments, and thin viscosity which makes them perfectly suited to airbrushing and brush painting alike.
Packaged in 32ml bottles, these Spanish-made paints are highly pigmented with aluminium pigments which means they offer exceptional coverage and shine, while being thin in their consistency – in my estimation their viscosity is somewhere near that of skim milk. They are water-based paints which means they are easy to clean and don’t smell bad, but as always we suggest wearing a mask and taking precautions when airbrushing them.
Currently we are stocking three shades of silver: dark aluminum (dark), silver (medium), and chrome (light), as we believe with these three paints you should be able to mix to whatever shade you are looking for. It is worth noting however, that there is a whopping total of 15 shades of silver available from the manufacturer, in case mixing is not your thing.
The only criticism of the Vallejo Metal Colour range I have heard is that they only have one shade of gold, and one shade of copper available. Out of the bottle I would describe the gold as a ‘green’ gold, however, years ago I learnt from some great painters on the internet that if you mix a little of the copper in with the gold you can give it warmth – and that can easily be brightened with one of the silver paints, such as chrome.
When airbrushing with these paints there is no thinning necessary, and the manufacturer recommends you spray at approximately 15-20 psi. If you want the most shiny result possible, it is advised prime gloss black, for which we have Badger’s Stynylrez gloss black primer available.
